Reflections:

This past week has been rewarding. I’ve had the opportunity and privilege to meet a few fifth and sixth graders. In meeting May and Monica we read the book En Mi Familia by Carmen Lomas Garcia. Both students have read this book before but enjoyed reading it again. I had the students read every other page- as we took turns reading I jotted down words that the students struggled with pronouncing for an example Monica had problems pronouncing “bishop” I explained to her that a bishop is kind of like a priest or pastor, someone in a place of leadership.I plan on doing the same routine with each group of students. Have them read every other page while I read the “other” page and write down vocabulary words and assessment questions after reading, questions asking about the context of the book or any issues mentioned. Such as, culture. Not only did my students learn new vocabulary words but I did as well. There were a many Spanish words in the story and apart of our homework was to learn the Spanish vocab word with it’s definition. I enjoyed reading En Mi Familia with my 5th and 6th graders and would recommend this book to any teacher.

Group Reflection
Group Reflection week #2
I read "Tornadoes!" by Gail Gibbons. The book itself is full of information about tornadoes and the effects it brings when tornadoes hit. I believe the students liked it. I chose to read "Tornadoes!" because the issue i picked was Natural Disasters, and how it affects us and nature in general. While reading about tornadoes I was able to tie in different competencies and lessons we learned in class while reading to the students. While reading the book I used denotation to allow the students look at the pictures of the book and give me their opinion of what was going on and inferring the classification of the tornado. While reading the students were able to identify the author’s purpose; informing us the readers about tornadoes. Vocabulary words I used were – demolish, foundations, devastation, humid, and cumulonimbus. The students learned a lot about tornadoes and the book and so did I. Lisa read "Magic School Bus inside the Earth" by Joanna Cole. Her and her students talked about the different layers of the earth and the different rocks presented in the earth's core and crest. Lisa’s vocabulary words were – sedimentary, metamorphic, jackhammer, axle, and igneous. Her final issue was the lack of earth supply. Eric read the "Gershon's Monster" by Eric Kimmel. The book had a lesson; when you do something good, you get in return. Eric’s vocabulary words were – tzaddik, barged, parchment, prophecy, and immense. The issue he got from the book was cultural beliefs
